The city police has banned pillion riding within the city limits from 11 pm to 6 am, with the exception of women and children.
The additional commissioner of police (co-ordination), Mr Dwaraka Tirumal Rao, said the prohibition on pillion riding will be enforced within the city limits until further orders.
Speaking on the investigation into the recent communal clashes in the city, Mr Tirumal Rao said 152 cases were registered since March 27 and 165 persons were arrested. “Over 100 persons have been taken into custody for violation of 151 IPC and released later,” he added.

Peace committees for old city
Mohalla committees are to be revived by the police in an effort to restore and maintain peace in sensitive localities.
“We will be forming mohalla committees in all areas in the old city. These committees will have representatives from all religions and all sections of society,” said the police commissioner, A.K. Khan.
Mohalla or peace committees have worked well in some parts of the country. They comprise elders from the locality with equal representation from both communities. They interact with the youth and calm things down when there are signs of tension.
“They will also keep vigil at mandaps and processions during Ganesh, Ramzan and other festivals. They also work as volunteers and when they encounter strangers they inform the police. During communal riots and stone pelting incidents, they could play a key role in talking to both groups,” said an official. A previous experiment with peace committees was not a success as members misused their proximity to police officials and created ID cards for themselves.
Mr Khan said curfew will be relaxed in all 25 police station limits on Monday from 8 am to 5 pm as “there is improvement in the situation and in view of people’s need to go out to buy items of daily needs.”

Day curfew to be lifted tomorrow
The city police has decided to relax curfew in the riot-hit areas during daytime from April 5. But curfew will continue during nights.
The commissioner of police, Mr A.K. Khan, announced that curfew would be relaxed for three hours in the riot hit areas on April 4 (Sunday).
“We have decided to relax curfew during daytime from Monday but haven’t decided on the timing,” he said. “It would be for seven to eight hours,”
Police said the relaxation was meant to ensure smooth conduct of business in the areas and to restore normalcy.
“On Saturday, people thronged the streets when curfew was relaxed and it was peaceful,” said a senior police officer. “There is better availability of commodities thanks to government supervision as well as the efforts of NGOs and philanthropic individuals.”
At least 70 organisations have approached police to help out and they have been deputed to interior areas where poor people live.
All fair price shops and shops which sell essential commodities and medicines would remain open during curfew relaxation.
On April 4, curfew will be relaxed between 7 am and 10 am in Tappachabutra, Asifnagar, Mangalhat, Kulsumpura, Shahina-yathgunj, Habeebnagar, Begumbazar and Afzalgunj police station limits.
From 10 am to 1 pm, curfew would be relaxed in Charminar, Hussainialam, Kamatipura, Bahadhurpura, Kalapathar, Falaknuma, Chatrinaka, Shahalibanda, Moghalpura, Bhavaninagar, Dabeerpura, Mirchowk, Reinbazar, Madannapet, Santhoshnagar, Kanchanbagh and Chandrayangutta police station limits.
Meanwhile, police arrested six persons who pelted stones and injured the DCP (traffic II), Mr C. Ravi Varma, on March 30.

The Andhra Pradesh capital limped to normality with no untoward incident being reported from any of the 25 curfew-bound areas of the old city on Saturday, but the authorities seem to be in no mood to lift the curfew, a demand that has been gaining strength among people.
The normal situation during the phased curfew relaxation in 25 police station areas on Saturday has only prompted the authorities to announce further extension of curfew relaxation periods. “If situation improves further, we will consider lifting the day curfew,” Commissioner of Police A.K. Khan said.
Saturday, the fifth day of curfew, tested the patience of not only citizens in the 25 police station areas, but also the policemen enforcing it. “If the situation is normal, why continue the curfew?” was an oft-repeated question media personnel had to face. However, Mr. Khan would only say that the decision to lift the curfew would be entirely based on situational assessment by his team and also on the intelligence inputs. While the Special Investigation Team led by Additional CP, Crimes, K. Narasimha Reddy, began investigation into communal violence, allegations of police harassment have begun to surface from both the communities. While the BJP has accused the police of picking up innocent people just to counter-balance the number of arrests made from the minority community, the Majlis has alleged that the police are unleashing a reign of terror by arresting innocent people. MIM president and MP Asaduddin Owaisi staged a protest in front of Charminar police station on Friday night.

Curfew will be lifted in phases
The city police commissioner, Mr A.K. Khan, said curfew would be relaxed in a phased manner on Thursday morning and males above 50 and women will be allowed to move on the streets.
“We are talking to other departments regarding the supply of essential commodities and running of markets during the curfew relaxation,” he said. “We will keep tabs on the prices of commodities, vegetables and medicines.”
“After two days of violence the situation is stabilising,” the commissioner said. “No fresh clashes have been reported in 17 police stations of South Zone and eight police stations of other zones.”
Mr Khan said additional forces were being deployed and appealed to people to stock up for a few more days, hinting that curfew may continue.
Around 200 video cameras will be monitoring and recording the movements of the people during curfew relaxation.
In phase I, from 8 am to 10 am, curfew will be relaxed in Santosh Nagar, Madannapet, Bhavani Nagar, Kanchanbagh, Charminar, Kamatipura, Kalapather, Bahadurpura and Hussainialam. In the second phase from 11am to 1 pm, people can move out in Mirchowk, Dabeerpura, Reinbazar, Mangalhat, Falaknuma, Chandrayangutta, Chatrikanaka and Shahalibhanda.
When asked about the marriages scheduled on Thursday, Mr Khan replied, “Jab miya biwi raazi, to kya karega commissioner?”
Ten companies of BSF, CRPF, RAF and CISF that arrived in the city have been deployed in the riot-hit areas. About 12 senior IPS officers are monitoring the situation and police from unaffected areas have also been deployed.
Meanwhile, police also began an intense drive with the help of GHMC to remove the flags and banners of religious and political groups in the sensitive areas and in other parts of the city. “Tying of flags and banners in public places will be viewed very seriously,” he said. “Processions and dharnas are also banned in the city till the situation comes under control.”
The commissioner said that permission was granted for a procession on Tuesday after discussing with all leaders and weighing the pros and cons.
“We have not allowed the procession in the affected areas,” he said. “The procession and clashes were recorded with 75 cameras, and we are identifying the miscreants based on the evidence.”

SIT to probe threat letter to AP HC chief justice
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to step up the probe into the threat letter sent to Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Nisar Ahmed Kakru, a senior police officer said on Friday.
Already five suspects had been questioned and police expressed confidence that they would be able to crack the case in the next couple of days.
"So far five suspects, who were taken into custody, have been interrogated. We have got some leads and we will crack the case in the next 2-3 days," Hyderabad city commissioner of police, Mr A.K. Khan said here. SIT has been formed to speed up the probe, he said.
Police sources said a stamp paper vendor and a notary advocate from Ranga Reddy district were among those picked up for questioning as part of the investigation after Charminar Police registered a case on Wednesday.
The letter, sent last week to Kakru, had reportedly threatened to physically harm the judge over his remarks after the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Telangana Lawyers had boycotted court proceedings on March 8 to protest the attack on its members allegedly by TDP activists.
