Normal life has been badly affected in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godvari district due to heavy rains and strong winds caused by cyclone `Laila’
The air, train and bus services were thrown out of gear in the district. A Rajahmundry-Hyderabad Kingfisher flight returned to Andhra Pradesh capital without landing here today in view of inclement weather conditions, officials said.
Several air passengers have cancelled their tickets for the next two days, airline sources said.
A number of trains passing through the district are running late due to submergence of rail tracks at several places. Road traffic has been disrupted due to uprooting of trees and electric poles.
The coastal district experienced heavy rains last evening, but there was some relief as downpour stopped this morning. Several areas were plunged into darkness and communication systems snapped.
Collector M Ravichandra said the cyclonic storm was likely to cross Kakinada at 1800 hrs. He said the situation is being monitored regularly and all precautionary steps have been taken to deal with any eventuality.
The government has appointed a Special Officer, J S V Prasad, to coordinate with the district administration in relief and rescue operations.

Woman falls off talking on cellphone
A 40-year-old woman, Mukala Durga Devi, suffered a fatal fall from the second floor of building as the newly constructed parapet wall on which she was leaning while answering a phone call on her mobile caved in at Ramakrishna Nagar in Rajahmundry in East Godavari on Tuesday. She died on the spot. The parapet wall was constructed in the morning.
At about 3.30 pm, Durga Devi climbed up the second floor of the building which was being constructed when she got a call on her mobile. She had bought space in the building recently. She used to sell coconuts in the local temple and is survived by her husband and two children.

All set for SSC, Inter exams
Elaborate arrangements are being made for the smooth conduct of the Intermediate and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations from March 10 and March 22 respectively in East Godavari. Nearly 1.75 lakh students including 98,000 from Intermediate will take the examinations which will be held at nearly 450 centres including 120 for Intermediate in the district of 60 mandals.
According to officials, 98,000 students would be appearing for the Intermediate examinations, including 35,848 first year. The examinations will be held from morning 8 am to 11 am from March 10 to 20, and from March 22 to 25 between 2 pm to 5 pm.
The authorities have deployed 120 chief superintendents, 120 departmental officers, more than 50 additional chief superintendents, five flying squads including revenue, police and education department and 10 sitting squads. As per the instructions given by the collector, Mr Gopalkrishna Dwivedi, the regional inspection officer of the Intermediate board, Mr C.M. Ghouse, has made fool-proof arrangements for the smooth conduct of examinations, and provided all facilities including drinking water and medical facilities for students.
For effective monitoring of the conduct of the examinations, a monitoring cell was opened with telephone number 0883-2473430. The students or parents can contact on this number for any information regarding the conduct of examinations.
For the SSC examinations, the district educational department under the district educational officer, Mr Dharma Raju, has made elaborate arrangements for the examinations which will be held from March 22 spread over 322 examination centres in the district.
A total of 76,048 students including 39,834 boys will appear in the examination, which will be held from 9 am to noon every day.
The DEO informed students to come to their centres by around 8.45 am during the examinations of English to Social Studies papers as they were implementing bar code system for these subjects.
Mr Dwivedi said that officials were instructed to ensure that there be no power cuts during the examination time. RTC authorities were also informed to operate frequent buses from all areas.
Section 144 would be in force at the examination centres, and the collector directed the closure of all xerox centres during the examination period from 9.30 am to 12 noon.
