He lost his elder brother just months before the Eamcet exams. His father earns a couple of hundred rupees driving an auto and his mother works in neighbourhood houses. He is Mohammed Gouse Jani from Visakhapatnam, topper of this year’s Eamcet.
Jani scored a staggering 159 marks out of 160, the highest marks in the engineering stream, the results of which were announced on Wednesday.
The student surmounted unbelievable odds to reach his goal. “I am blessed by the almighty. At one point of time, I did not have the money to study and now people are earnestly willing to help me. I thank them for their kind support and I also thank Narayana Sir for giving me free education to complete my Intermed-iate,” said an overjoyed Jani who said he studied 10 hours a day for the exams.
The lack of basic amenities in life did not deter him from dreaming of becoming an engineer, if not for anything else, but to help out his parents, who, he says, made great sacrifices for him. His father, Mohd Ameer earns Rs 100 to Rs 200 daily by driving autos and his mother, Shehnaz, works in nearby houses. But “this has never held them back from facilitating my education,” says Jani, dedicating his success to his parents.
The family lost their elder son in January, just months ahead of the Inter exams and Eamcet. But on Wednesday there was no sorrow in the household.
“I got a call from the Corporate College zonal in-charge that my son had topped the state in Eamcet. I was dumbstruck for a few seconds and immediately broke the news to my wife Shehnaz and my parents. It soon spread like wildfire in our locality — Muslim Thatichetlapalem — and people started flooding into my house,” said an ecstatic Ameer.

Navy officer dies after copter crashes in river
One person died after a Chetak helicopter of the Indian Navy (IN468) crashed into the Sharada River near Anakapalle, about 40 kilometres from Visakhapatnam, on Wednesday noon.
There were four persons on board the chopper and one of them, petty officer, Mr Krishna Kumar, died. He was taken to the NTR Hospital in Anakapalle where he was declared dead.
The three others, the pilot, Mr Tushar, the co-pilot, Ms Deepika Mishra, and Lt. Hrushikesh, sustained only minor injuries and were whisked away by naval officers after being given first aid.
It was at around 12.15 pm that the helicopter of the Eastern Naval command crashed into the waters of Sharada. “We saw the helicopter losing altitude and going down even before it approached the banks of the river,” said Mr K. Madhava Rao, an eyewitness. “It then hit a high tension power wire at a height of 120 feet and catapulted into the river.”
Mr Madhava Rao said he and six of his friends immediately swam to the helicopter and helped those inside to get out.

Vizag, Ongole in the eye of Cyclone Laila
The state is bracing itself to face Cyclone Laila which had intensified and was rumbling 500 km south of Vishakhapatnam and 350 km away from Chennai over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday night.
The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, has ordered the official machinery to be on full alert even as the Indian Meteorological Department forecast that the cyclonic system was likely to intensify further and move in a west-north westerly direction and cross the coast between Ongole and Vizag in the early hours of May 20. Heavy showers and strong winds started lashing the coast of Vishakapatnam at 9.25 pm and many portions of the city plunged into darkness with power lines going bust.
The cyclone warning centre alerted that the showers could continue and intensify in the coming hours. The CWC bulletin said that Vizag, Kakinada and Nizampatnam have been placed under the Danger-7 category (where the severity of the storm is very high) while Krishnapatnam has been placed under the Danger-5 category.
The bulletin also warned that the wind speeds could touch 125 km per hour and asked fishermen not to venture out to sea.
“We are monitoring the situation closely,” said Mr T. Radha, commissioner of disaster management. “Evacuation of people in the low lying areas will begin in the early hours of May 19. Army and National Disaster Management teams are coming to help local authorities.”
Anticipating a severe battering, the government has already evacuated people from 40 villages in Nellore district to safer places.

Prevent Maoist attack: CM
The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, has asked the police to ramp up security for public representatives and be on the alert to thwart attacks by Maoists.
He gave these directions while reviewing the security situation in the wake of the Maoist attack in Visakhapatnam on Monday. Maoists had gunned down the vice-chairperson of the Zilla Parishad, Mr U. Somalingam, at his house in Choudupalle.
The security of MLAs and ministers in North Andhra has already been stepped up. The ministers, Mr Botsa Satynarayana, Mr Dharmana Prasada Rao and Mr Balaraju were asked to be on alert. Public representatives have also been asked not to go to remote areas.
The intelligence IG, Mr Mahender Reddy, and the Commissioner of Police, Mr A.K. Khan, took part in the review meeting. Peace must for development: Rosaiah
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah on Sunday said that development at a fast pace was possible in the State only when a peaceful atmosphere was ensured.
He was speaking after laying the foundation for a park at the Old Central Jail area here. The park being developed by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) at a cost of Rs. 5 crore in an area of 18 .78 acres in the heart of the city has been named after former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Mr. Rosaiah lauded the welfare schemes launched by his predecessor and said that the park had been named after YSR as a tribute to the late leader.
Several facilities
The park will have wide outer pathway for walkers, ample parking space, food courts, street furniture, curb walls, stormwater drainage, rainwater harvesting and colourful illumination.
It will have an ornamental compound wall at a cost of Rs.1.3 crore. The park's construction will be completed in nine months.
In an oblique reference to disturbances over the bifurcation of the State, Mr. Rosaiah said: “There were attempts to disrupt peace in the State. I have made efforts to set them right from time to time. To guarantee all-round development, the support of all is solicited.”
Painting a rosy picture about the future of Visakhapatnam, he said the city was developing at a fast pace. As per some projections, the city was among the top five fastest developing places in the world.
“It is not a dream. The city with its landscape and natural beauty is going to become a world-class destination soon,” he remarked. He said the government had decided to develop an international-standard park to provide lung space for people though there were attempts to corner the land.
Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development D. Purandeswari, State Ministers Anam Ramnarayan Reddy, Kanna Lakshminarayana, Botsa Satyanarayana, P. Balaraju, Anakapalle MP Sabbam Hari and others were present. Visakha-II MLA Dronamraju Srinivas presided over the function.

LPG, natural gas supply through pipelines soon
A handful of apartment complexes have installed the reticulated system (in-built pipe lines for LPG distribution) in the city and in other major cities such as Hyderabad. As per the reticulated system, the LPG will be provided to individual households in an apartment complex.
Mr Abid Khatri of HPCL observed, “The system will be an in-built one and installed during construction by the builder himself. The LPG will be provided to all the individual apartments and consumption will be tagged with the help of a metre gauge.”
When asked if HPCL had anything to do with the installation or restoration work, he said, “We will issue a permit for the construction of the pipeline to a responsible builder. As for maintenance, we will help the various resident bodies or association by supervising and providing technical support for maintenance work.”
Mr Khatri, however, noted that the trend was yet to catch up and only a few apartment complexes in the city, some under construction boasted of this facility. Sources further disclosed that natural gas would be provided for domestic use, under the Krishna-Godavari Basin Gas Network Programme.
They added that various companies from their rigs would supply gas to regions in and around Hyderabad, Kakinada, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam by the end of the year 2010.
