Go for it if you love goofy Greek gods

There are too many Greek gods for me to keep straight, since as a child I didn’t have action figures as a learning tool. I was prepared to take notes during Clash of the Titans, but only wrote down a single one: Release the Kraken! — Conan O’Brien. I know I was intended to be terrified by the release of the Kraken, but all I could think of was O’Brien shouting “Release the bear!” and then some guy in a bear suit runs out and sits on the lap of a guest. In this case, the Kraken is the nuclear option for Zeus, who has been persuaded by Hades to put down a revolt by the upstart mortals of Argos.

The mortals are fed up with the whims of the gods. It would be one thing if they stayed on Olympus and killed time leaning on pillars and addressing one another in thundering ultimatums. Now they meddle in the affairs of men. King Acrisius of Argos declares war and enlists the aid of a demigod who has been found at sea. This is Perseus (Sam Worthington), son of Zeus (Liam Neeson) and a human mother. He didn’t ask to be a saviour, but would be happier as a simple fisherman. You know the type.

Zeus, it should be explained, disguised himself as the husband of Perseus’ mother and stole into her bedchamber to father the boy. So he is a rapist. Just sayin’. Perseus so loved his mother and adoptive father that he will never forgive Poseidon for drowning them, and wants nothing to do with gods. Yet such is his destiny.

The outcome is told in Clash of the Titans with impressive technical mastery and somewhat lesser dramatic command. For its intended audience I suspect this will play as a great entertainment. I enjoyed myself, particularly after they released the Kraken. There’s no particular dramatic conflict in the movie: Perseus has to wrestle with his demigod ambiguity; Hades (Ralph Fiennes) nurses a resentment against Zeus; he demands the sacrifice of King Acrisius’ daughter Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) to spare the city, and the citizens seem prepared to get along very nicely without her. That’s about it.

It’s strange how the sacrifice of one person makes us uneasy. Earlier in the film, the entire fleet of Argos is lost at sea, with the exception of the vessel holding Perseus. The king is philosophical: They were patriots. But the sacrifice of his own daughter — now you’re talkin’ real death.

Most of the film involves terrifying battles between mortals and special effects. After Calibos has a hand chopped off, his fingers grow into claws. Later, his blood drops start growing, creating a crowd of huge lobster-monsters that come crawling over rocks and snapping at everyone. Later in the film, inexplicably, these lobsters appear to be tame and walk obediently across the desert, bearing little houses on their backs for the mortals. What, did they forget they were the blood of Calibos?

There’s worse to come. Perseus and his comrades must invade the lair of Medusa, one of the three Gorgon girls, whose hair is a writhing mass of snakes and body is a long, lethal snake’s tail. Look at her, and you’ll turn to stone! Maybe this explains the high quality of Greek sculpture. The struggles with Medusa take place on ledges over a flaming lake of lava far below. She must be beheaded, which Perseus does, thoughtfully keeping the head, which he carries around like the head of Alfredo Garcia. Is that a spoiler? The story has been out since 490 BC.

The climax is classic, with the fair Andromeda hung by her wrists and suspended in a clinging white gown over a flaming pit at the edge of the sea. Meanwhile, Perseus flies to the rescue on the wings of the great flying horse Pegasus. The townspeople clamor for her death, but lose their enthusiasm after the Kraken rears up from the sea.

I like this kind of stuff. I don’t say it’s good cinema, although I recognise the craftsmanship that went into it. I don’t say it’s good acting, when the men have so much facial hair they all look like Liam Neeson. I like the energy, the imagination, the silliness. I even like the one guy who doesn’t have a beard. That’s Perseus. From the first moment we see him as an adult until his last scene in the movie, he has the Standard Regulation Macho-Length Stubble on his chin. And in a city where all the men go to Jerry Garcia’s barber, he has a burr cut on the short clipper setting.

So do I recommend the movie? Yes, if you intuit that this review is affectionate and have the same tolerance for goofy Greek gods as I do. One word of consumer advice, however. Explain to kids that the movie was not filmed in 3-D and is only being shown in 3-D in order to charge you extra. I saw it in 2-D, and let me tell you, it looked terrific.

Tollywood to observe shutdown on Friday over piracy

The Telugu film industry will observe a shutdown on March 19 to demand Andhra Pradesh government to deal firmly with piracy even as producer Yalamanchi Ravichand's fast-unto-death over the issue entered the third day on Wednesday with leading film personalities expressing solidarity with him.

The Movie Artists' Association (MAA) president, Mr Muralimohan, said on Wednesday evening that all activities related to the film industry would come to a halt on Friday to press the demand for anti-piracy measures.

The MAA appealed to owners of all theatres in the state to participate in the shutdown. Even it urged television channels not to telecast film-related programmes on the day.

Producers will not take up shooting and all the artists including top stars would participate in a rally. Muralimohan said a memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, to bring piracy under the purview of Goonda Act.

The MAA president and other industry leaders appealed to Ravichand to withdraw the fast. The producer is on fast in front of the office of the Film Chamber in Film Nagar here,

The producer of film "Mayagadu" received support from actor-turned-politician K. Chiranjeevi, and several actors and producers.

Chiranjeevi, who met the young producer, urged the Andhra Pradesh government to take firm action to deal with piracy a la Tamil Nadu.

"Piracy is like pick-pocketing and it should be treated as a crime under the Goonda Act," said Chiranjeevi, president of Praja Rajyam (PR).

Popular actors Nagarjuna, Junior NTR and several others also called on Ravichand to express solidarity with him.

According to Telugu film industry, the second biggest after Bollywood, piracy was causing a loss of over Rs 200 crore every year.

Raavan to release at Iifa Seoul

There’s something about the Iifa. The event seems to hold definite charm for Mani Ratnam, whose big budget extravaganza Raavan may premier at this year’s edition of the International Indian Film Academy Awards — to be held at Seoul in South Korea.
Of course, this isn’t the erstwhile director’s first brush with the Iifa. Yuva, also starring Abhishek Bachchan, had also premiered at Iifa. The Bachchans have a long connection with the Iifa, as Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of the event. The move may definitely do some good for Raavan, as the Iifa is a popular event and will provide the film with some much desired international exposure and acclaim.
Slated for a July 18 release, Raavan also stars Aishwarya Rai Bachahan, Govinda and South star Vikram.

Priyanka is yet to watch MNIK

Priyanka Chopra sent Shah Rukh Khan a text message recently, expressing her desire to watch the film. “Priyanka heard about how brilliant the film is and she sent an SMS to SRK telling him that she couldn’t squeeze time out of her tight schedule to watch the film and that she wants to do so soon when she returns to Mumbai from her schedule,” said a source.

Rishi Kapoor too reportedly recently sent an SMS to Shah Rukh Khan and expressed his appreciation for the film.

An injured knee slows Hrithik down

Hrithik Roshan, undoubtedly one of the most sensational dancers Bollywood has ever seen, has been forced to slow down due to his constant knee problems. Hrithik had hurt his knee again while shooting for Kites in the US. Treatment followed and things seemed all right for a while. But now the actor has gone off to Singapore for treatment.

“In Singapore for a day treating my knee! Wish me luck guys! Getting back in action. Fingers crossed!” tweeted Hrithik on his profile. Kites is a dance-based love story starring Hrithik, Barbara Mori and Kangna Ranaut, which is scheduled for a summer release.

India has dream run at Berlin film fest

India has a dream run with eight feature films including My Name Is Khan, Peepli Live and Manthan at the ongoing Berlin International Film Festival.

In its 60th anniversary, the festival has selected a wide range of Indian Bollywood and arthouse films in several languages. They are represented across different festival sections.

There are also Indian films in the European Film Market that runs parallel to the Berlinale. No wonder there are nearly a 100 Indians at the festival.

The eight features include Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan, Dev Benegal’s Road, Movie, Anusha Rizvi’s Peepli Live, Laxmikant Shetgaonkar’s Paltadacho Munis (Man Beyond the Bridge, Konkani), Umesh Kulkarni’s Vihir (the Well, Marathi), Kaushik Ganguly’s Arekti Premer Golpo (Just Another Love Story, Bengali), Shyam Benegal’s Manthan, Satyajit Ray’s Charulata and Madhusree Dutta and team’s Cinema City.

Moreover, Indian film director Sridhar Rangayan is on the Teddy Queer Film Award Jury, which honours the best festival films in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) context.

My Name Is Khan got a thunderous reception here. Dev Benegal’s Road, Movie opened the Generation 14-plus section for young adults.

“I am thrilled that my film is in Berlin — I’m living the dream. But it is also historic, as it is the first Indian film to be picked up for international distribution by Fortissimo Films,” Benegal told IANS.

Film My Name Is Khan sets a new box office record in US and Canada

Shahrukh Khan starrer 'My Name Is Khan' has turned out to be the largest weekend grosser Bollywood film ever in North America, recording an estimated USD 1.86 million in the US and Canada.

The movie, directed by Karan Johar averaged a stellar USD 15,500 from 120 theatres across the US and Canada.

The Fox Searchlight movie opened on Friday with USD 444,000 and rose 65 per cent to USD 734,000 on Saturday.

It is estimated to dip seven per cent to USD 682,000 today, celebrated across the world as Valentine's Day.

Monday's 'Presidents' Day' holiday in the US will lead to a four-day debit of more than USD two million, the firm handling promotion and advertising of the film claimed.

'My Name Is Khan' also generated the highest per-theatre average of any film in the Top 20 over the weekend.

The previous record was held by Shahrukh's musical extravaganza 'Om Shanti Om', which grossed USD 1.76 million from 114 theatres over Diwali weekend in 2007.

The American mainstream media is all praise for the movie which received rave reviews.

"This is a movie not built for subtlety, but it does tackle a subject American movies have mostly avoided - that of racial profiling and the plight of Muslim-Americans.

It also allows Shah Rukh Khan to display his talent to an even wider audience. It's well worth the 162-minute journey,"

Indian poverty under Oscar scanner again

There's no blockbuster like 'Slumdog Millionaire' in the reckoning but India's poverty story is again under the Oscar scanner with US director Gregg Helvey's Hindi film 'Kavi' about child labour being nominated in the short film (live action) category.

Produced by Guneet Monga, Harish Amin and Helvey, 'Kavi' tells the story of a young boy who wants to play cricket and go to school but is forced to work in a brick kiln.

Last year, the India story was projected through three films -- 'Slumdog Millionaire', the rags to riches story of a slum boy, and two documentaries 'The Final Inch' and 'Smile Pinki'.

While the 'The Final Inch' was about health workers travelling throughout Uttar Pradesh, urging parents to get their children vaccinated against polio, 'Smile Pinki' focused on a girl whose cleft lip made her a social outcast till her life changed after a meeting with a social worker.

'Slumdog' won eight Oscars, and 'Pinki' took home a golden statuette in the short documentary feature category.

In an earlier era, veteran Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray, who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Academy Award, was criticised by actress Nargis for 'selling Indian poverty abroad to win awards'.

Ray's masterpieces include the 'Apu' trilogy, 'Ashani Sanket', 'Jana Aranya', 'Mahanagar' and 'Pratidwandi'.

Malayalam actor Cochin Haneefa dies

Popular Malayalam film actor Cochin Haneefa died at a hospital in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 58.

Haneefa, known for his villainous roles as well as his prowess at comedy, had been in and out of hospitals since last October following a liver ailment. His body is expected to be brought to Kochi on Wednesday for the last rites.

Born as Salim Ahmed Ghoush, the actor who hails from Kochi started off as a mimicry artiste and was also an accomplished script writer. He entered the film world in 1979 playing villain in Mamangom, but slowly turned to comedy and also essayed character roles. In an acting career spanning more than three decades, he acted in more than 300 films including Tamil, Telegu and Hindi.

His last Malayalam film was Body Guard released last year. The veteran also directed seven Malayalam and six Tamil films.

Haneefa's all-time hits include Meesha Madahavan, Kireedom, Azhakiya Ravanan, and Parakum Thalika. He was the director of hit film Valsalyam.

Bollywood star Aamir Khan's father Tahir Hussain passes away

Tahir Hussain, well-known filmmaker and Bollywood star Aamir Khan's father, died of a massive heart attack here on Tuesday morning.

He is survived by his wife and two sons Aamir and Faisal and two daughters Farhat and Nikhat.

Hussain is known for producing hits like "Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke" (1993) that starred son Aamir, "Dulha Bikta Hai" (1982), "Zakhmee" (1975), "Anamika" (1973) and "Caravan" (1971).

In 1990, he made his directorial debut with "Tum Mere Ho" with Aamir and Juhi Chawla.

Family sources said Hussain died at Aamir's residence in Bandra. Aamir and his wife Kiran are in the US for the Sundance Festival and are taking the first flight home. Hussain's grandson, Imran Khan, who made his debut with "Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na", is in New Zealand and will also be coming back.

‘Maya Bazar’ in a vibrant avatar

Come Saturday, the all-time great movie in Telugu Maya Bazar is set to hit the silver screens in colour format and more than anybody else, legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao, who played the role of Abhimanyu in the movie, is curious to watch it again.

“With humour, action and drama in equal quotients, it’s already a colourful movie and this colour format adds new variety to the movie. It’s a ‘maya kalakandam’,” says Mr. Rao. Released on March 27, 1957 in black-and-white format, the film has a huge star cast, including N.T. Rama Rao, S.V. Ranga Rao and Savitri. “It is tough to point out the hero of the film. Apart from the story, I would say it was Savitri,” he explains.
Favourite song

On his favourite song in the movie, Mr. Rao says each song in the movie is exceptional. “But ‘Nivena nanu pilachinadi’ is the one I enjoy more and it would be interesting to watch it in colour format,” he says.

Apart from being associated with the movie as an actor, Mr. Rao has some interesting aspects to share with people.

“Actually, the movie release was postponed by over three months. On the sets of the film , I met with an accident and was hospitalised. Action scenes between me and S.V. Ranga Rao in Maya Bazar were yet to be filmed and were shot only after I was discharged,” he recalls.

This apart, there is one more interesting issue. “Unlike other producers who get worried over the delay, Mr. Chakrapani used to visit me in the hospital daily and taught me playing cards,” he laughs.

When asked to recommend one of his movies to be transformed into colour format, he replies saying “In fact, there were plans to transform Devdas into a colour movie but I suggested Mooga Manasulu. More than Devdas, which has deep melodrama, Mooga Manasulu with river Godavari in the background, would be a visual treat to watch it in colour format.”

Mr.Rao still feels the role he enacted in Baatasari film as his best and describes Adurti Subba Rao, L.V. Prasad and K.V. Reddy as the best directors he had worked with.

T-activists burn cutouts of Adurs

With a few hours left for the release of Junior NTR -starrer Adurs, some pro-Telangana activists damaged the movie’s cutout at Nagender Theatre near Saroornagar on Tuesday. The movie is scheduled to be released on  Wednesday.

The Saroornagar police said four persons involved in the incident - Anand, Zaheer, Sandeep Reddy and Pandu, all TRS activists - were arrested and sent in remand. All the four went to the theatre around 1:30 pm and suddenly burnt the posters and cut-outs of the movie set up there,’’ Inspector Srinivas Reddy told Expresso. A police team on guard near the theatre nabbed the accused who reportedly raised slogans against Jr NTR and other Telugu actors who expressed their support to united AP. The incident caused panic among the public in and around the threatre.

Many pro-Telangana outfits, including the Telangana Jagruthi led by KCR’s daughter Kavita, have threatened to stall the screening of the movie across the Telangana region. The incident took place after DGP R R Girish Kumar assured security during the screening of the movie.

TRS vows to make Bhogi bonfire of Adurs

Adurs, starring NTR Jr, is set to hit the screens Wednesday under the watchful eye of the police in the Telangana region. Notwithstanding the actor’s appeal on Monday evening, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhara Rao’s daughter Kavitha renewed her boycott call on Tuesday forcing the film producers to move the High Court.

Justice G Raghuram of the High Court asked for DGP RR Girish Kumar’s response and upon being informed that the police would provide security, disposed of the producers’ petition.

Earlier in the day, film industry representatives submitted a memorandum to Governor ESL Narasimhan seeking protection for the smooth screening of films in the region. Simultaneously, the Producers’ Council appealed to the Telangana Jagruthi, the cultural arm of the TRS headed by Kavitha, to let the film have a smooth run in Telangana. Producers of Adurs, Kodali Venkateswara Rao (Naani) and Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan, too appealed to Kavitha not to play spoilsport.

But an adamant Kavitha turned the heat on the producers. ‘‘By not screening the film, distributors and exhibitors in Telangana will not incur losses.

Unless the producers make their stand clear on the Telangana issue, we will not allow the film to be screened,’’ she said. Her charge is that Kodali Naani, a TDP legislator, and Vamsi Mohan, also a TDP leader, stand for a united State. ‘‘Both had expressed solidarity with Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal when the latter went on a fastunto- death against bifurcation of the State recently,’’ Kavitha reminded.

Releasing copies of the agreement between the producers and film distributors in the Telangana region, she pointed out that the producers had agreed to return money to the distributors within 60 days if the film faced any problem.

Meanwhile, Naani and Vamsi Mohan said, ‘‘we are not against Telangana.

Neither NTR, Vinayak (director) nor we have the power to give a separate State. We are going ahead with the release and the government has assured us of all cooperation.’’ TDP general secretary Aravind Kumar Goud, BC Welfare Minister Mukesh Goud and BJP senior leader N Indrasena Reddy found fault with Kavitha and others for ‘‘banning’’ Adurs.

Meanwhile, TRS activists burnt posters of NTR Jr at a cinema in Saroornagar here in the State capital.
