In the wake of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) unearthing a massive recruitment scam, the Railways has postponed the written examinations by all the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) scheduled on June 27. These exams were to be held for the posts of enquiry-cum-reservation clerks and goods guards.
The Railway board has begun a technical audit into the examinations conducted by the various RRBs, including the assistant loco-pilot and assistant station master exams conducted by the Mumbai RRB.
Meanwhile, the CBI still awaits the nod from the Centre to arrest the Mumbai RRB chairman, Mr S.M. Sharma, amidst reports that his house in Mumbai is locked up.
A senior CBI official said, “We have sought the permission for Mr Sharma’s arrest as he is a joint-secretary rank official. As per the Section 6 of Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, we need the permission.”
CBI officials said they have no information about Mr Sharma’s house being locked up. The CBI is probing further into the scam, which, it has turned out, is a “family enterprise” of two top Railways officials — Mr S.M. Sharma and the Raipur additional divisional railway manager, Mr Arun Kumar Jagannadham.
Hunt is on for other accused including agents and sub-agents. CBI teams, which left for various parts of the country, are brining four suspects who were picked up for questioning. Four of the accused — Mr Vivek Bhardwaj, Mr Sharma’s son, Mr A.K. Jagannadham, his son, Mr Srujan and Mr Murthy — have applied for bail.
Meanwhile, Railway officials stated that Mr Sharma has been placed under suspension with immediate effect, until further orders.

T-trouble returns to haunt Eamcet
Eamcet is headed for fresh trouble in the wake of the volatile situation in the state following the arrest of the Kadapa MP, Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, on Friday.
JNTU-Hyderabad had made all the arrangements for the smooth conduct of Eamcet to be held on May 30, but the call for a ‘Telangana bandh’ given by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee on May 29, a day ahead of the exam, is worrying exam officials.
Eamcet is a common exam conducted across the state simultaneously in over 5,000 centres on a single day. Any disruption in even one centre means the exam will have to be cancelled throughout the state.
The officials are praying that the bandh goes off peacefully and no fresh violence breaks out in any part of the state on Saturday.
The Eamcet convener, Prof. Ramana Rao, said there is no change in the exam schedule as of now and it will be held on Sunday as scheduled.
“We have already sent the entire exam material and staff to all the centres in the districts. We are ready to conduct the exam on Sunday,” Prof. Rao said.
Eamcet is already delayed by two weeks this year due to student agitations in support and against bifurcation of the state in December last year.
The exam is usually held by May 15 every year, but was postponed to May 30 this year.
Any further delay would affect admissions for engineering, medical and pharmacy courses in the ensuing academic year.

Postponed SSC exams to be held from April 9
The SSC examinations that were postponed because of the curfew in parts of the city will now be held from April 9, the director of government examinations announced on Saturday. The next exam of Social Studies Paper II will be held as per the original schedule on April 6.
The Mathematics Paper II exam, which was postponed in the curfew zones on March 30, will now be held on April 9. The General Science Paper I and II, which were scheduled for March 31 and April 1 and were postponed across the 410 centres of the twin cities, will now be held on April 10 and 12 respectively.
The Social Studies Paper I will now be held on April 13. All exams will be held between 9.30 am and 12 noon. Students who could not sit for the Mathematics Paper II exam on March 30 due to the curfew, will have to fill an applicat3ion and submit it to the chief superintendent along with their residential address and phone number to be allowed to sit for the exam on April 9, when it is conducted again.
“These applications will be printed and kept ready with the chief superintendent, who is the head of the examination centre. Students should fill this application when they go for their exam on April 6 and submit it to the chief superintendent,’’ said Poonam Malakondaiah, director of school education. She said students would be required to give their residence address in the application form.

Students may have to sit on floor for exam
Nearly 365 centres out of the total 2,331 that have been identified for Intermediate public exams scheduled to begin from March 10, have no benches, desks and tables and the students would be forced to sit on the floor to write the exams.
The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) is making last minute efforts to provide furniture in these exam centres. It has asked all the districts’ administration to arrange for benches and desks on rent if required, and, even agreed to bear the expenditure.
Over 18.70 lakh students will appear for the Inter exams.
“The furniture problem is especially acute for centres located in interiors and remote areas. We have asked the officials to explore various options like shifting the furniture from nearby government offices, private schools and colleges. They were also asked to hire them from private institutions and we are ready to pay the rent,” said Mr G. Balaramaiah, secretary, Board of Intermediate Education.
He said the Board was forced to alter the timings of three papers as they overlapped with the SSC exams, which will begin from March 22.
“The Inter exams between March 22 and 25 will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm. The remaining papers will be held as scheduled from 8 am to 11 am from March 26 to 30,” he said.
The overlapping of Inter and SSC exams occurred due to the postponement of Inter exams from March 3 to March 10 due to the Telangana agitation.

Inter exams on time
The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) on Monday announced that the Intermediate public exams for practical and theory papers will commence from February 3 and March 3 respectively, as per the original schedule.
The BIE secretary, Mr G. Balaramaiah, issued an official release on Monday putting to rest speculation that the exams would be postponed after academic activities were disrupted in December due to the agitations by students.
A recent meeting convened by the BIE with the regional inspection officers (RIOs) had suggested that the exams be postponed and this was also demanded by the government junior colleges.
However, the practical exams will be held from February 3 to 22, theory exams from March 3 to 22 and environmental education exam on January 30, which is a compulsory qualifying subject for all groups. The Government junior colleges are unhappy with the Board’s decision.
“How can the government justify conducting the exams as per the original schedule when it had declared holidays for two weeks for all junior colleges in the Telangana region in December?” said Mr Madhusudhan Reddy, the general secretary of the AP Government Junior Lecturers’ Association.
The association fears that the results in government colleges may be poor if the exams are not postponed.

Intermediate examinations as per schedule
The intermediate practical and theory examinations slated to be held in March will be conducted as per schedule and there was no change in the exam schedule, the Board of Intermediate clarified here on Monday. The Environmental education examination will be conducted on January 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and practical examinations would be conducted from February 3 to 22 and theory examinations would commence from March 3 and end on March 22.
