Thursday’s sudden violent reaction to the conspiracy angle to YSR’s death served as a caution to the Centre about moving forward on the Telangana issue. The Union home secretary, Mr G.K. Pillai, took stock of the situation. He discussed this with the Andhra chief secretary and DGP.
The core group of Congress, which met on Friday, also decided to form a panel on Telangana only after normalcy is restored in the state.
“We discussed the issue, but no decision has been taken,” sources in government said. Asked about a mechanism, including constituting a committee to work for a peaceful resolution of the issue, they said this was possible only after the restoration of normalcy in the state. The mechanism could be discussed in the Cabinet meeting, they said.
The core group meeting of Congress deliberated in detail on the issue.

The Telugu Desam chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, termed the attacks as pre-planned and alleged that Mr Jagan and his henchmen were behind it.
The TD chief said that Jagan’s newspaper carried several reports on the alleged conspiracy but it did not evoke much response.

State-wide attacks on Reliance stores
YSR’s death was no accident, but an assassination, if reports are to be believed. Reliance is allegedly involved in the sabotage of the helicopter that carried him to his fateful death, reports a news channel TV5. The Godavari Gas Basin issue is supposedly the bone of contention.
Congress workers are now on a rampage now, and state-wide, Reliance outlets and offices have been forcibly shut down.
Congress activists on Thursday attacked Reliance outlets in many places in the state after private TV news channels aired a report allegedly filed by a Russian website that named Mr Mukesh Ambani in relation with the death of Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.

First, the crash: one of India’s most popular politicians, who heads the state of Andhra Pradesh, just died in a mysterious helicopter crash. What’s eerie is that the dead politician recently went public attacking India’s most powerful oligarch family, the Ambanis, threatening to take away their giant offshore gas concessions. Meanwhile the Ambani brothers, Mukesh (the world’s 7th richest man) and Anil (the world’s 34 richest) are battling each other in a blood feud that’s taking the whole country down with them–that’s not a hornet’s nest you’d want to stick your fingers into, even if you’re the governor of a huge Indian province. The Ambani brothers’ feud peaked in May when Anil’s helicopter was found to have been sabotaged just before takeoff (read about it here). Anil strongly hinted he suspected Mukesh, but no one will ever know who did it, because the mechanic who discovered the dirt and gravel in Anil Ambani’s helicopter gear box was hit by a train two days later in what was initially ruled as a “suicide,” but which later was ruled murder.
So why would an Ambani have anything to do with the mysterious helicopter crash of Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy? Just speculatin’ on a hypothesis, as the police chief says in Miller’s Crossing, and here’s why:

51 cricketers shortlisted for IPL auction
Indian Premier League (IPL) announced a list of 51 players for the auction to be held here January 19.
For IPL third edition received 100 entries from international players. The eight franchisees shortlisted 60 players for the auction and of these only 51 have been cleared. The remaining players will feature pending NOCs from their home boards.

Chidambaram tells Stop agitations, maintain peace to Andhra leaders
Home Minister P Chidambaram appealed to political parties in Andhra Pradesh to halt agitations and ensure law and order as they deliberated a mechanism to break the logjam on the issue of statehood to Telangana.

A second incident of a possible fatal attack on an Indian came to light today with a body found in southern Australia last week identified as that of an Indian, even as officials from both countries prepare to meet to defuse the tension following the murder of a migrant in Melbourne.
A partially-burnt body found last week in Australia's New South Wales province is believed to be of a 25-year old Indian national, police said today, in what might be the second fatality in a slew of vicious attacks on Indians.
The body found on a roadside near Griffith on December 29 is however yet to be formally identified and Australian officers are in touch with the man's family in India and the Indian Consulate to help with identification, the New South Wales Police Force said in a statement.
The incident was reported close on the heels of murder of Nitin Garg, a 21-year old Indian in Melbourne on Sunday -- the first Indian casualty in a series of attacks on the community in the country, that drew a sharp reaction from India.
External Affairs Minister SM Krishna "reminded" Australia of the economic fallout of such attacks as he asked the country to take strong action to punish the culprits.
Indian diplomats here are expected to meet Australian officials in a bid to defuse diplomatic tension between Canberra and New Delhi after the murder.
Protestors disrupt rail and road transport in Andhra Pradesh
The Hindu Members of Joint Action Committee for unified Andhra Pradesh staging a rail roko at Vijayawada railway station on Tuesday.
Transport services across Andhra Pradesh were hit on Tuesday giving a tough time to commuters as pro- and anti-Telangana agitators held road and train blockades in the State.
The all-party Joint Action Committee (JAC) campaigning for united Andhra Pradesh called for road and rail blockades in the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, while students and other agitators held blockades in Telangana region in support of the demand for separate State.
The agitators blocked roads at various places in coastal Andhra like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram and in Kurnool and Kadapa among other towns of Rayalaseema.

Solution to Telangana if we take one step at a time
Home Minister P. Chidambaram today appealed to political parties in Andhra Pradesh to help the central government find a solution to the Telangana issue and made subtle hints that Maoists would be happy if they failed to find a solution.
In his opening statement at a meeting of eight recognised political parties from Andhra Pradesh, he said the agenda is to "deliberate on the mechanism and lay down a road map for the consultations".
"I urge each of the political parties represented here to show accommodation and goodwill. Ultimately you must find the answers and you must help the central government find a solution."
He said though the agenda for the meeting may appear limited, he was confident that "if we take one step at a time we will, eventually, find a solution".
The Minister asked the parties to give their views on what is the mechanism and the road map for consultation among parties and groups.
Apparently hinting at Maoists, he said "I wish to caution all political parties that there are forces waiting on the wings who ridicule parliamentary form of democracy and who would be happy if we collectively fail to find answers to the issues that concern us and we should not give any room for these forces to gain strength or credence."

Restore normality
Mr. Chidambaram said that while the parties deliberate on issues and take forward the process of consultations, they must recognise the fundamental importance of restoring normalcy in Andhra Pradesh.
"There must be a halt to agitations and bandhs. Law and order must be maintained. Children must go to schools and colleges. People must be allowed to carry on their normal day-to-day activities," he said.
The Minister said the government must be able to focus on development and welfare of the people and it was in the interest of all sections of people of Andhra Pradesh that peace and harmony prevail while consultations take place.
"Let us demonstrate the strength of our democracy and the capacity of our political parties to resolve differences and find solutions," he said.
At the outset, Mr. Chidambaram also sought to dispel a number of misconceptions which he said were there on the Telangana issue.
"There is a misconception that the central government acted in haste; that the political parties were not consulted; and that I, as Home Minister, acted as an individual. As you are all well aware, none of these misconceptions is supported by facts, but I shall not waste your time refuting these conceptions," he said.
A long history
Mr. Chidambaram said there was a long history behind the demand for a separate state of Telangana and referred to the reports of the States Reorganisation Commission, the Gentleman's agreement of 1956 and the amendment of Article 371(1) of the Constitution.
He also mentioned the six-point formula of 1973 and the introduction of Article 371-D in the Constitution.
The Home Minister said in the elections to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly in May 2009, the political parties outlined their positions in their respective election manifestos.
"The central government was concerned when an agitation was started in November, 2009 demanding a separate state of Telangana," he said.
The Minister reiterated that the first statement on behalf of the central government was made on the basis of the minutes of the all-party meeting held on December 7, 2009.
He admitted that the situation on the ground has "altered significantly" since the all-party meeting of December 7 and the first statement on behalf of the central government on December 9, 2009.
"Taking note of the altered situation, on December 23, 2009, the central government promised to hold wide ranging consultations with all political parties and groups in Andhra Pradesh," he said.
Mr. Chidambaram said, "Let us demonstrate the strength of our democracy and the capacity of our political parties to resolve differences and find solutions".

The Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots has kicked up a fresh controversy after 18 medical students were expelled from their hostel on charges of ragging in a manner similar to a scene in the movie and the Maharashtra government saying it would go through the script.
An all-party meeting chaired by the home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, to devise a mechanism and a road map to resolve the Telangana issue began on Tuesday.

Students of the joint action committee (JAC) at Osmania University, the nerve centre of pro-Telangana protests, on Sunday said they would block all the entry points to Hyderabad, including national highways, in a bid to prevent leaders of Seemandhra (Rayalseema and Andhra) from entering the state capital on January 5.

Student JAC to block national highways on January 5
Students of the joint action committee (JAC) at Osmania University, the nerve centre of pro-Telangana protests, on Sunday said they would block all the entry points to Hyderabad, including national highways, in a bid to prevent leaders of Seemandhra (Rayalseema and Andhra) from entering the state capital on January 5.
