The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) on Monday announced that the Intermediate public exams for practical and theory papers will commence from February 3 and March 3 respectively, as per the original schedule.
The BIE secretary, Mr G. Balaramaiah, issued an official release on Monday putting to rest speculation that the exams would be postponed after academic activities were disrupted in December due to the agitations by students.
A recent meeting convened by the BIE with the regional inspection officers (RIOs) had suggested that the exams be postponed and this was also demanded by the government junior colleges.
However, the practical exams will be held from February 3 to 22, theory exams from March 3 to 22 and environmental education exam on January 30, which is a compulsory qualifying subject for all groups. The Government junior colleges are unhappy with the Board’s decision.
“How can the government justify conducting the exams as per the original schedule when it had declared holidays for two weeks for all junior colleges in the Telangana region in December?” said Mr Madhusudhan Reddy, the general secretary of the AP Government Junior Lecturers’ Association.
The association fears that the results in government colleges may be poor if the exams are not postponed.

Curbs on TV channels urged
The state government will urge the Centre to bring in a legislation to rein in private TV channels from indulging in sensationalism.
The information minister, Dr J. Geeta Reddy, said the Chief Minister would take up the issue with the Centre. The government will stay committed to the freedom of the media but it would insist that channels maintain restraint in the people’s interest, she said.
The move came after several complaints that TV news channels were fanning the flames by repeatedly telecasting scenes of violence. The last straw was the violence following the report by TV5, based on a Russian website’s claims linking YSR’s death with the Ambanis.
She maintained that the government was committed to the welfare of journalists and pointed out that health insurance benefits under Rajiv Arogyasri were extended to journalists.

China tests missile interception technology
China on Tuesday said it had successfully tested a surface-to-air missile system designed to intercept other missiles.
The test on Monday of a “ground-based, mid-course missile interception technology” had “achieved the expected objective,” the official Xinhua news agency said.
“The test is defensive in nature and is not targeted at any country,” the agency said in a brief report.
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) stepped up its modernization in the 1990s after studying U.S. use of high-technology weapons and systems in the first invasion of Iraq.
China jumped to second place in the list of the world’s biggest military spenders in 2008, behind only the United States, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reported last year.
Its estimated military spending reached $85 billion, one-seventh of the estimated U.S. spending, the institute said.
During a parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, the PLA showcased more than a dozen missile systems.
Among those identified were Dongfeng 21C medium-range ballistic missiles, Dongfeng 15B and Dongfeng 11A short-range missiles, Hongqi coastal defence and ship-to-air missiles, and Hongqi 12 surface-to-air missiles.

“Music is something that should happen…. like a flowing river or waves of the sea. You cannot make it,” music director Ilayaraja said here on Monday at an interactive session with students of MOP Vaishnav College for Women as part of the Pongal celebrations.
Waves of excitement swept the college hall as the maestro spoke and performed for over two-and-a-half hours. The audience sang along with him as he performed with his favourite harmonium that he described as his “best friend who understands and shares his emotions.”
“I may not be able to see you all. But, I relate to you through music. Any form of classical music is made for youth,” said Ilayaraja, who took a break from a composing session to meet the students.
Recalling his early years of career and how music overtook schooling, he said he grew up amid songs and accidentally accompanied his brother for concerts. “I used to sing in female voice then and later played harmonium in the absence of the other artists,” he said.
Ilayaraja, who has composed music for 887 films, said: “I am still in this field because I don’t know music…. I still have so many things to pass on to the younger generation.” He also shared his thoughts about different genres of music and discussed the nuances of music.
For many budding singers in the college, singing before him and a word of appreciation turned out to be a dream come true.
Answering questions posed by the students, Ilayaraja said western music is like living with society and orchestration is necessary. But, classical music is directed towards God and there is no need for such accompaniment.
He also expressed his anguish over the growing difference in recording system where there is no interaction between artists and orchestra.
On college principal Nirmala K. Prasad’s appeal that he should initiate the process for setting up a university for music, he said that he had made such a suggestion sometime at a function organised by the State government. “It somehow didn’t happen so far. I hope it would be set up soon,” he said.

SC orders CBI probe into Soharabuddin Sheikh encounter
The Narendra Modi government in Gujarat on Tuesday suffered a setback with the Supreme Court directing a CBI probe into the 2005 Soharabuddin Sheikh encounter case.
A bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and Aftab Alam in its verdict accepted the demand for the probe on the plea of the brother of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was allegedly killed in a fake encounter by the Gujarat Police.
The decision is a major blow to the BJP government in Gujarat, which has been consistently maintaining that it’s SIT was conducting the probe in an impartial manner.

TDP alleges scam in rice supply to Tamil Nadu
Senior TDP leader and former Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh K. Siva Prasad Rao has alleged a Rs. 26 crore scam in the supply of 2 lakh quintals of rice to Tamil Nadu.
Speaking at a Press Meet at the TDP Office here on Sunday, he charged that an Andhra Minister has demanded a bribe of Rs. 130 per quintal from rice Millers Association for entrusting the rice supply order to them.
Mr. Siva Prasad Rao wondered why the AP State Civil Supplies Department has not accepted the offer of Rice Millers Association to supply rice at Rs. 100 per quintal lesser than the Food Corporation of India (FCI) price of Rs. 1770 per quintal.
The Telugu Desam Party leader wanted the Andhra Government to disclose the price which the Tamil Nadu Government is willing to pay.

Intermediate examinations as per schedule
The intermediate practical and theory examinations slated to be held in March will be conducted as per schedule and there was no change in the exam schedule, the Board of Intermediate clarified here on Monday. The Environmental education examination will be conducted on January 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and practical examinations would be conducted from February 3 to 22 and theory examinations would commence from March 3 and end on March 22.

Irrespective of the outcome of their final group match against Bangladesh on Monday, India will meet Sri Lanka in Wednesday’s final.
Kohli notched up his fifth half century in his 18th ODI, which he made with the help of nine fours while Gambhir, who was dropped twice -- on 41 and 44 -- smashed his 19th ODI fifty in his 94th match.
With this win, India, who played today without key players Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra, have won two matches out of three while Sri Lanka ended their league engagements with three wins out of four.
India have collected nine points, with a bonus point for reaching the target in less overs in Sunday’s match.
The victory by Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men has also rendered inconsequential their final match against Bangladesh on Monday.

India test fires Astra missile
India on Monday successfully test fired the Astra air-to-air missile from its Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Orissa coast.
The beyond visual range air-to-air missile was tested at the Chandipur test range at about 9.45 a.m.
“The test was a success,” S.P. Dash, director of the ITR, told IANS.
Another Astra missile is scheduled to be tested from the same test range later in the day, he added.
Hot pizzas make 5 youths cool their heels in jail
This one is about a group of five city lads whose desire to have some hot pizzas late on Saturday evening eventually landed them in jail. Since, the `gang' - all members in their early 20s - did not have enough money to pay for the pizzas, they tried the grab it by force.
The sequence of events started from the Fourth Floor Domino's outlet in Niralanagar. It was exactly at 10:52 pm when the outlet got a call to deliver 12 pizzas at Flat Number 103 of Paper Mill Colony under Mahanagar police station. Order ready within the next 20 minutes, delivery boy Arif reached the Paper Mill Colony for the delivery.
A resident of Shivanagar in Khadra, Arif, was still looking for the address when he spotted a group of youths chatting near a residential block. With no other help in sight, Arif approached them, seeking directions for the address to flat number 103. To his surprise, the group informed him that they themselves had ordered the pizza and were waiting for delivery.
As an unsuspecting Arif began to take out the packed pizza from the cassarole box mounted on his scooter's pillion, one of the youths asked him about his job profile and the awkward situations in which he may have entered into while on delivery of order. As Arif replied the unusual queries, he handed over the bill - totalling around Rs 1,000 - to one of them, waiting for the payment. When he found that none of them was even talking about the money, leave alone reaching for their wallets, he asked them for payment.
It was here that two of the youths pushed him, making him hit the ground on the other side. Stunned by the sudden attack, Arif struggled to get up but by then the youths had quickly jumped into a Maruti car parked near by and sped away. Back on his feet, Arif quickly called up the police control room, providing them with parts of the registration number and description of the getaway vehicle. Through with the call, Arif reached the Mahanagar police station to lodge a formal complaint. But before he could do, the wireless network flashed details of the car and its occupants intercepted by the police at Hazratganj crossing.

One of the production guys however, happened to see her tweets on Twitter stating that she will be attending a dubbing session on the same day. The channel producers were upset that the actress lied to them and are now zeroing in on another celebrity guest.”

Fast-track T, KCR tells PM
The Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief, Mr K Chandrasekhar Rao, met the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Sunday and requested him to expedite the process of formation of separate Telangana state from Andhra Pradesh.
Sources said Dr Singh told Mr Rao that the government’s focus was to bring normalcy in Andhra Pradesh and cool political temperatures before making a move on the issue.
The TRS chief, who was accompanied by the party ideologue, Prof. K. Jayashankar, told the Prime Minister that there had been no fullfledged discussion on the issue after the all-party meeting called by the Union home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on January 5, to discuss the roadmap for carving out separate Telangana.
Sources said the TRS chief, who has been camping in the national capital since the all-party meet, has been anxiously awaiting the announcement of a committee by the government to look into the vexed issue.
This, said sources, may help him explain his position to party supporters back home. Sources also said the TRS chief requested the PM that instead of the committee, it would be better if the Union home minister himself headed further consultations on the issue.
Prof. Jayashanker said the TRS was prepared to wait for a “reasonable period” if the Centre was sincere over Telangana. “We are prepared to wait. There is a constitutional procedure and legal formalities have to be completed,” he said.

Woman ends life with kid
A 22-year-old housewife allegedly committed suicide along with her ten-month-old daughter by jumping into a sump in her house at Vanasthalipuram here on Saturday.
Sunitha, a resident of Christian Colony, was found dead in the sump around 6 pm along with her daughter.
According to the Vanasthalipuram police, Sunitha married one Prasad around two years ago. A suicide note purportedly written in Telugu by Sunitha asked her parents to forgive her and mentioned that her husband took good care but she did not want to live.
The Vanasthalipuram SI, Ch Ramaiah, said the couple’s was a love marriage.
“The sump was a closed one with a manhole,” he said.
The incident came to light when Prasad, a lab technician, noticed the bodies in the sump. The bodies were shifted to the Osmania General Hospital for autopsy.
The Vanasthalipuram police registered a case under 174 CrPC (suspicious death).
Power cuts to go on till February
Citizens of Greater Hyderabad will continue to suffer unscheduled powercuts for a longer time. The emergency load relief (powercuts) may extend to February and even beyond.

The TRS chief is planning to meet the Prime Minister on Sunday evening.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of political parties has been convened on January 12 to chalk out the future course of action.
“We wanted to create peaceful and congenial environment for the Central government to take forward the Telangana issue. We are confident of a positive result,” Mr T. Harish Rao, TRS MLA told this newspaper.
The TRS chief is planning to meet the Prime Minister on Sunday evening.
