AP State ranks No.1 in AIDS suicides

The state has recorded the highest number of suicides by those affected by HIV/AIDS in the country. About 352 people affected by AIDS committed suicide last year as per the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Though Andhra Pradesh is considered to be one of the top states in disseminating AIDS education and raising awareness campaigns, the suicide rate is disturbing said experts.

About 245 men and 107 women ended their lives that accounted for 2.5 per cent of the total suicides in the state.

Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra follow AP in the number of suicides by HIV+ persons. In Madhya Pradesh, which is second on the list, 134 suicides were reported. Throughout India, about 799 HIV patients committed suicide.

NCRB formulated the information based on input from the police.The state also has the highest number of HIV+ people.

The report also says that 263 youth ended their lives because of failed love affairs, with AP ranking fourth in the country.
