News channels to skip IPL coverage

The Indian Premier League (IPL) may not make the headlines on TV news bulletins this year.
Protesting the IPL’s new match coverage guidelines, which reduce the footage that can be carried on bulletins, the 34 members of the News Broadcasters’ Association (NBA) have decided not to cover the Twenty20 event at all. At a meeting held on Tuesday, the IPL organisers refused to back down and return to the norms negotiated in 2008, provoking the NBA decision.
“IPL/SETMAX have arbitrarily refused to abide by their commitment as contained in the 2008 norms. In view of this position unilaterally taken by IPL/SET MAX, members of the NBA are unable to offer to their viewers any coverage in relation to IPL or its proposed matches,” said an NBA statement. The Indian Broadcasting Foundation had requested the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to intervene.
