Telangana: court dismisses petition by former MP

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected at the admission stage a public interest petition filed by a former Member of Parliament, for declaring the seats of 130 pro-Telangana MLAs vacant in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly treating their resignations as deemed to have been accepted by the Speaker the moment he had received the letters.

A three-Judge Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice J.M. Panchal and Justice Deepak Verma questioned the locus standi of the petitioner M. Narayana Reddi in seeking the resignations to be accepted.

The CJI asked the petitioner’s counsel: “There is no public interest involved in the issue. Who are you? It is very strange. You are not an MLA or MP. You have not submitted the resignation. Who gave you the right to present petition? We will not hear you. You don’t have any right to file the PIL on behalf of others.”
