Mr Chidambaram, on way to Delhi from Coimbatore, halted at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here and held discussions with the director-general of police, Mr R. Girish Kumar, and the Cyberabad commissioner of police, Mr Prabhakar Reddy.
Mr Chidambaram asked the police to be on alert in the wake of intelligence inputs that Pakistan trained Lashkar-e-Tayyaba activists had sneaked into the city to carry out blasts in crowded areas.
However, Mr Girish Kumar said, “It was a regular meeting. There is no review. It was a transit halt and we met him as a courtesy.” Mr Chidambaram was closeted with the DGP and the CP for about two hours in the airport VIP lounge. Mr Chidambaram arrived at about 2.45 pm and left by 4.30 pm. Mr Girish Kumar explained to Mr Chidambaram on the security and anti-sabotage checks being carried out in the city. He asked the officials to step up vigil in crowded areas and at vital installations.
Meanwhile, the city police are on the lookout for Rafique Bawa of the Indian Mujahideen terror module, who is the key aide of absconding terror suspect Riyaz Bhatkal.
Police said that Rafique Bawa, driver of Riyaz Bhatkal, was arrested near Chikkamagluru in Karnataka in October 2008. It is suspected that Rafique who jumped bail is suspected to have contacted his handler Riyaz Bhatkal, suspected to be hiding in Dubai.
In a related development, the Central Bureau of Investigation, Delhi team, probing the Hyderabad Mecca Masjid blasts, visited Nashik and questioned Malageon blast suspects.
With the permission of Nampally Criminal Courts, the CBI team visited Mecca Masjid. They questioned Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and army officer Purohit lodged in Nashik Road Central Jail.
The team members questioned the accused regarding the Mecca Masjid blasts in 2007 in the state.
The court has allowed the CBI to question them from April 30 to May 5.
The Mecca Masjid blasts rocked the city and the case is yet to be solved.
