Tougher bypolls await TRS

Retaining all the 10 Assembly seats is going to be a major challenge for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi as the by-elections are unlikely to be an easy affair.
The TRS, which claimed to be the champion of the Telangana cause, will have to face competition from the Congress, the Telugu Desam and smaller parties.
According to sources, Congress leaders are likely to campaign against the TRS saying that the UPA government would backtrack on the Telangana issue if the ruling party candidates are defeated in the elections.
The Telugu Desam will also say that it has always been committed to Telangana and had not bowed to the demands of Andhra leaders who sought support for a united Andhra Pradesh.
Both the major parties don’t want the TRS to win seats easily. Backward Class leaders of various Telangana associations are also contemplating contesting the by-elections.
The TRS won Sirpur, Chennuru, Manchiryal, Yellareddy, Korutla, Dharmapuri, Siricilla, Huzurabad, Siddipet and Warangal west in the last elections. The TRS, which had 26 MLAs in 2004, managed only 10 seats in 2009 though it had an alliance with the Telugu Desam.
The TRS was banking on MLAs and MPs of other parties resigning and facing a by-election. But except for one BJP MLA, MLAs from other parties did not quit.
Major political parties feared that the TRS would use the by-election to improve its tally in the Assembly, though the political JAC had given an assurance that all those who resigned would get elected to the House.
