U.S. condemns Uganda attacks

Amid fears about American casualties in the bomb attack in Kampala, the United States has condemned the terrorist strike, in which at least 50 people were feared dead.

The United States condemned the terrorist attacks in Uganda during the World Cup final Sunday and noted that Americans may have been among those killed or injured.

At least 50 people died in bombings targeting people watching the World Cup at a restaurant and a rugby club in Ugandan capital Kampala, according to local media reports.

“I join President Obama in strongly condemning today’s attacks in Kampala, Uganda targeting innocent spectators watching the World Cup final,” Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement late Sunday.

“We understand that American citizens may have been injured or killed and our embassy is reaching out to assist. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims, in the United States and Uganda.” The U.S. would work with Uganda to bring the perpetrators to justice, she said.

No one had yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Somali militants had threatened attacks in Kampala because Ugandan troops are in Mogadishu.
