Syed Viqaruddin Ahmed alias Viqar, a terror suspect arrested on Wednesday, confessed to have killed a police constable in Ahmedabad when he tried to stop Viqar’s gang from committing a robbery at a bank. He also told the police that following the Gujarat riots in 2002, he planned to take revenge against the Gujarat ministers by eliminating them.
“For this he had purchased a piece of land for Rs 5 lakh at Romalgar Village in Ahmedabad and constructed a house with an intention to carry out the activities of his outfit, the Tahreek Galba-e-Islam,” said a source. Viqar and five of his associates were produced before a magistrate at his residence at Red Hills in Nampally here on Thursday and were remanded to 14 days. Later they were sent to Cherlapally jail. Viqar’s role in the theft in five E-seva centers also became clear during the interrogation. The thefts were meant to fund terror activities.
He stole Rs 14 lakh from the E-seva centres in Chaitanyapuri, Old Malkapet, Santhoshnagar, Chikkadpally and Banjara Hills. Viqar and Suleman alias Amjad were directly involved in these thefts. They were supported by one Omar, who is still absconding. Another person who aided Viqar is also at large.
