CM to go ahead with meeting of collectors

The two-day conference of collectors will begin on Wednesday amidst escalating tension in Telangana following the death of a student on the Osmania University campus. The pro-Telangana forces, including the JAC of students and political parties, have called for a bandh on Wednesday.
On an earlier occasion, the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, had cancelled a Cabinet meeting when there was a bandh call. However, this time, the government has decided to go ahead with the collectors conference.
Sources said the Chief Minister would seek specific assurance from the collectors on the deadline for the housing programme in the flood affected areas.
The revenue minister, Mr Dharmana Prasada Rao, said the collectors would be told about the priorities of the government and asked to implement projects effectively. Since there will be no agricultural operations in the next few months, focus will be on welfare schemes, he said.
The government decided to provide houses to all flood victims under special provisions. The state has already released funds for this scheme.
Sources said Mr Rosaiah was not pleased with the tardy progress of even temporary restoration works in the four flood affected districts. The elected representatives had told the Chief Minister about the incomplete works.
Mr Prasada Rao said the collectors would also be asked to sensitise farmers on power supply in the rabi season. When asked why the government listed irrigation low on the agenda, he said it would not mean that the government’s priorities had changed. Expressing grief over the death of a two-year-old after he fell into a defunct borewell, the minister said the collectors would be directed to take stern action against borewell owners. He said despite huge revenue loss to the state the government was trying to ensure that welfare programmes were not hit.
