Exam fever runs high in city

“Exam fever” has gripped students ahead of the Board exams which begin on March 3. The level of stress is high this time because of the disruptions caused by frequent bandhs due to the Telangana agitations, and by swine-flu, flash floods and other incidents such as the untimely death of Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.
The CBSE Board exams for Class X and Class XII students will begin simultaneously from March 3 while the Intermediate public exams will start on March 10. Student counsellors are flooded with calls from students seeking advice on how to deal with parental pressure, fear of memory loss, pattern of question papers and questions on the grading system.
“We had less time for preparation this year. To de-stress, I meditate and do yoga,” said Niharika, a Class XII student.
Ranjit Sachdev, a Class X student, said: “I exercise and get enough sleep. I also take nutritious food. Sometimes I listen to music to relax.”
Nearly 23,000 students from Andhra Pradesh of the total 1.74 lakh students registered in the southern region appear for CBSE exams, and about 16 lakh students have registered for the Intermediate exams.
Several education reforms announced in 2009 have added to the uncertainty. “With a series of reforms introduced in a single year, students lost time trying to understand them and prepare for the exams accordingly,” said Mr D. Chandrakanth, a parent.
First it was the Centre’s decision to abolish Class X Board exams for CBSE which created much confusion. The CBSE then clarified that the exams will be held as usual this year and any changes will be made in the next academic year — 2011-12. Then came the proposal to introduce grading in CBSE Class XII exams, which will come into force from this year.
Students and parents have several doubts about the procedure to be followed to grade the students and what would happen if marks are required to be shown to secure seats in professional and other colleges. After a lot of debate, the CBSE has clarified that marks will be provided to students on demand.
