The IPL matches may have been moved out of Hyderabad but fans are guaranteed excitement akin to that in a stadium thanks to multiplexes decidng to screen the matches live.
This is the first time that a sports event is being telecast in a theatre in India.
“We have completed all the formalities and obtained the licence from local authorities and are only waiting for UFO (a satellite company) to get back to us,” said Mr Penchal Reddy, GM of Inox.
“We plan to have promotional events, music, cheering — to create a stadium-feel. Tickets will not cost extra, just the usual movie rates will apply,” he said.
UFO and Real Image have acquired rights to telecast the matches in theatres. “According to IPL regulations and tie-up, UFO and Real Image will manage the screening of matches,” said Mr Vijendar Reddy, president, AP Film Exhibitors Association. “Matches will be telecast only in multiplexes and not cinema halls,” he said.
Mr Krishnamurthy Kishen of Prasads Multiplex is not sure about the telecast of matches. “We are keeping our fingers crossed. By Wednesday evening we will get a clear picture,” Mr Kishen said.
Adlabs, Cinemax and PVR are among the others who will be screening the matches. Mr Ashish Saksena, COO of BIG Cinemas (West and South), said, “We will try to screen as many matches as possible. As per the agreement we have to screen a minimum of 45 out of the 60 matches.”
