SMS viruses and email hacking are yesterday’s cyber crimes. The hacking of two cabinet ministers’ profiles threw light on a new kind of cyber menace to hit the twitterverse. It’s no longer just high-profile celebs who are being targeted on Twitter with lewd postings, the have now hit closer home too, with young Hyderabadis falling prey to hackers. Over the past few weeks, their profiles are being ‘Twitterjacked’ with raunchy tweets sent out to contacts leaving them embarrassed.
Dhruv Kapoor, a public relations professional, whose Twitter account was recently hacked into, says, “A particularly obscene message was sent out to some people on my list. Unfortunately, my girlfriend’s mom has Twitter on her mobile phone and she got it as a text message. It was embarrassing and I had to explain to her what was going on.”
A common crass tweet doing the rounds is of a 24-year-old female issuing vulgar invites to other tweeple. Youngsters like Akshay Bajaj had to apologise to professional contacts who received this message. “It was a rather delicate situation for me when my account got hacked into. But it just might be a virus considering the same thing is happening to so many people. And despite using the best anti-virus software, I fell prey to it.” A few like Gurdeep Bagga see the lighter side of things. “While having your Twitter account hacked into can leave several people red-faced, luckily for me, my friends understood. Many even turned into a joke and asked me if I’d been high.”
