The Centre has asked the state not to allow admissions for the additional seats sanctioned by the tainted Medical Council of India (MCI) chairman, Mr Ketan Desai, in three private medical colleges.
The medical education minister, Mr P. Sudarshan Reddy, told mediapersons that the MCI has decided not to allow admissions for the additional seats in the NRI Medical College (Guntur), NBN Medical College (Mahbubnagar) and the MNR College (Sanga Reddy).
The minister also said the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, had made enquiries about the MCI graft scandal and its impact on the state at a review meeting held here on Tuesday.
The CM also decided to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the important issue of handing over 15 per cent medical seats to the national pool.
The state has been avoiding joining the national pool to which 15 per cent seats in MBBS and post graduation courses from the state colleges should be given. The state has almost 4,000 medical and dental seats. In return, students from the state will be permitted to appear for the national medical test conducted by the AIIMS for admission into premier institutes. J&K and Andhra Pradesh are yet to surrender seats to the national pool.
